ENTWICKLUNG DES PHARMAMARKTES
IN ÖSTERREICH

CURRENT DEVELOPMENT
OF THE PHARMACEUTICAL MARKET
IN AUSTRIA

Here you will find our newsletter on the current development of the pharmaceutical market in calendar week 06 in the year 2022. You will receive the next newsletter on 25th of February 2022.

Due to the predominant Covid-19 variant Omicron, the number of active cases remains high, but has decreased for the first time since 2021 and has therefore reached its peak. This week, 389,385 confirmed Covid-19 cases were reported in Austria. Compared to the previous week, this represents a decrease of 26,657 cases of Covid-19 infections.

In the current calendar week six, 6,526,581 people in Austria are already considered fully vaccinated. This represents only a slight increase of 30,451 fully vaccinated persons compared to the previous week. In the current sixth calendar week, 6,782,462 people have received their first vaccination and another 4,942,549 people have received their second dose.

Looking at the retail market, pharmacies recorded a significant increase in sales of +12 % in the sixth calendar week, in contrast to the same calendar week of 2021. At the same time, current sales drop by – 9 % compared to the previous week.

The development of volume in calendar week six shows, a significant increase of +10 % compared to the previous year. The current volume also decreases, like sales, with -9 % in contrast to the previous week.

The two segments – patented Rx products and unprotected Rx products – also show a strong increase in sales of +12 % for patented and +4 % for unpatended Rx preparations compared to the previous year 2021. On the other hand, it can be clearly seen that sales in both segments are down sharply by -10 % compared to the fifth calendar week of 2022. The drop in sales in the current sixth week can be explained by the school holidays in Austria.

The volume development of the OTC & Homeopathy and Health & Beauty market shows a very positive trend compared to the previous year. However, volume in packs decrease compared to the preceding week. In the current calendar week six, +26 % more packages are sold in the OTC & Homeopathy segment than in the same calendar week in 2021. The number of products sold in the Health & Beauty segment also increases with +6 % compared to the previous year. But volume decreases in both segments – OTC & Homeopathy and Health & Beauty – with -6 % and -5 % compared to the last calendar week of 2022.

Finally, we look at the development of volume in packs in the cough and cold market. The strong growth of the previous week continues in the current calendar week compared to the previous year. In calendar week six, the cough and cold segment is selling +94 % more packs than in the same calendar week in 2021. Reasoning behind the considerable growth in packs, among other things, is the currently predominant Covid-19 variant Omicron which causes mostly cough and cold symptoms. Compared to the previous week we see a decrease in sales of the cough- and cold market of -5 %.
