ENTWICKLUNG DES PHARMAMARKTES
IN ÖSTERREICH

CURRENT DEVELOPMENT
OF THE PHARMACEUTICAL MARKET
IN AUSTRIA

Here you will find our newsletter on the current development of the pharmaceutical market in calendar week 03 in the new year 2022. You will receive the next newsletter on 4th of February 2022.

As seen in the graphic below, sales show a positive development of +7 % compared to the same calendar week of 2021. In contrast, sales decreased by -12 % compared to the previous week.

The following diagram displays that the number of Covid-19 infections has increased rapidly compared to the previous week. In the current week, there are 274,778 active Covid-19 cases, where last week we had 118,085 active cases. Thus, within one week, the number of Covid19 infections has more than doubled. If we look at the current vaccination numbers, in the current calendar week we see already 6,380,422 people who have received their first vaccination and another 4,559,882 who have received their second dose. Currently, a total of 6,421,416 people are considered fully vaccinated.

The volume of the current week increased by +4 % compared to the same calendar week in 2021. However, compared to the previous week, volume shows a negative development by -2 %.

In the next table we look at the patent-protected Rx products and unprotected Rx products side by side. In comparison to the same calendar week in 2021, sales are up +9 % for protected Rx products. However, we see a stagnation in unprotected Rx products compared to the same time period. If we compare the data with the previous week, we see that sales decreased for both protected Rx products and unprotected Rx products. Sales declined by -16 % for the protected Rx products and by -14 % for the unprotected Rx products.

The next chart gives information about the development of the OTC & Homeopathy and Health & Beauty market. If we compare the two categories, we see that they do not develop in the same direction. The Health & Beauty segment shows a drop of -4 % in volume compared to the previous week and a drop of -11 % compared to the same calendar week of 2021. However, the OTC & Homeopathy segment shows an increase of +15 % compared to the same week last year and a decrease with -7 % compared to the previous week.

Let’s have a look at the last diagram, which represents the volume of the cough and cold segment. It illustrates the strong increase in volume compared to the same period in 2021. Volume increased by 65 %, which can also be due to the new much more contagious virus variant. However, if we compare the sales of the cough and cold category with the previous week, we see a decrease of -4 %.
